The VIII international festival of Jewish music "LvivKlezFest 2016"
will be held in Lviv from 23 of May until 5-th of June.

This year motto is, "760 years of unique stories of Lviv: Jewish music returns!"

Since 2009, over the last 8 years the Festival has been recovering and developing the Jewish culture in our L'viv – the multicultural capital of Ukrainian Galicia.
The Festival has become very popular and now attracts many tourists from all over world.
This year the best Klezmer musicians of our time will come to Lviv. They are:
Frank London and Lviv Jazz Orchestra (USA-Ukraine)
Alan Bern (Germany) and Svetlana Kundish (Israel)
Daniel Kahn & "The Painted Bird" (Germany–USA)
"Ronen and The Jewish-Groove Project" (Israel-Ukraine)
"Klezmafour" (Poland)
"Gefilte Drive" (Israel)
"SHO?! - Klezmer band Odessa" (Ukraine)
The original and talented musical group "Varnitshkes" will traditionally represent L'viv.

Klezmer's music is the traditional music of Eastern European Jews. This is the music of joy and happiness, which accompanied the celebrations of Jewish, Ukrainian, Gypsy, Moldavian and Romanian weddings.
The festival program is very diverse, and includes interesting exhibitions and theatre performances, master classes of Jewish and modern Israeli dances, bard song chamber and street concerts under an open sky.
Professional guides will provide in Russian and English the sightseeing tours devoted to the Jewish history of L'viv.
Finishing the Festival will be a grand Gala-concert under the open sky in the heart of the city.

As a special present for the opening of the Exhibition about our Festival there will be a master-class of Israeli dances in the Honorary Consulate of the state of Israel in Western Ukraine. The Jewish dance is one of the sides of the Jewish cultural heritage. Hearing hora we will forget about everything in a rushing merry circle dance, dancing oriental debka we will feel hot sand under our feet. We are going to learn the dances of modern Israeli choreographers which were designed to dance in the street by all who desire. The overwhelming positive atmosphere is garanteed.

"Padam..." - the performance-song.The author's project in form of musical confession devoted to the encounter, which brought us the best songs of Edith Piaf and made her one of the brightest stars for good. The pianist and composer, who was a Jew from Ukraine, wrote those songs. This performance-song lasts life-long in few languages - Ukrainian, French and Yiddish.

Aleksandr Kotler - the leader of the famous Israeli neo-klezmer group "Gefilte Drive" as well as the magnificent solo-singer Tatyana Volosov will take part in the concert!

Frank London (New York, USA) and Lviv Jazz Orchestra (Lviv, Ukraine)
Frank London is one of the most respected Klezmer musicians nowadays and has Ukrainian roots. He is the founder of the legendary Grammy-bearing band "The Klezmatics", trumpet player, composer, bandleader and Executive Director of the numerous Klezmer music festivals.
This year in cooperation with L'viv Jazz Orchestra Frank London will present a unique program "Shekhinah L'viv", which is a fascinating mix of Klezmer, Latin and Jazz, where two great musical traditions – Klezmer and Big-Band Jazz will unite.
Maestro refers this program as one of his largest and boldest projects. Two cultures encounter in this program by means of music - the common and universal language. Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird
(Germany-USA)

Daniel Kahn is one of the brightest representatives of the contemporary Klezmer movement and the global underground music . He is a singer, actor, musician, composer and poet. Together with the klezmer band "The Painted Bird", he strikes the spectators by his special approach to the traditional Jewish musical material interpretation - the songs in Yiddish that sound like punk-folk and cannot leave anyone indifferent. However, the punk-folk is only the one of many colors in the palette of the team that have been surprising fans all over the world since 2005. The band performances look like real fireworks!

Alan Bern (Germany)
An outstanding musician, teacher and composer. One of the most significant figures in the klezmer music world and revival of traditions sphere. He founded the legendary band "BraveOldWorld". He is also the Director and founder of the largest European annual educational Klezmer Festival "YiddishSummerWeimar" and many other cultural forums, music projects, events all over the world.
At the festival "LvivKlezFest-2016" along with virtuoso singer Svetlana Kundish from Israel, Alan Bern will present the program "Shma Koleynu. Prayer and song". The program is based on synagogue music and Hasidic Niguns and includes numerous styles of Jewish art - from ancient traditional tunes to compositions of contemporary authors.

Svetlana Kundish (Israel)
Svetlana is well-known and very interesting young Jewish music performer of different styles. The singer's repertoire covers both ancient and modern synagogue music compositions in Ladino, Hebrew and Yiddish languages. The singer was born in Ukraine, and at the age of 13, she moved to Israel and began her musical education. Later she continued to Vienna Conservatory, faculty of Opera singing. Svetalana is a professional Cantor. She was a student of legendary Nehama Lifshitz.
Svetlana has such achievements as the 1-st prize of the Berlin International Competition of Jewish Song "Golden Chanukia", participation in "Yiddish Summer Weimar", "Yiddishfest", "Klezkanada", "AkiEstamos", "NewYiddishSongNewYork" and others festivals.
Group "Ronen and The Jewish-Groove Project" (Israel)
It is a joint project of the famous Israeli performer and guitarist Ronen Calif and of the Ukrainian musicians. Ronen Calif has a master's degree in jazz singing, which he received at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. His beautiful, full of charisma, velvet voice captures the audience from the first notes. Ronen works in jazz, ethno jazz, rock and pop styles. With different programs, he has conquered many European stages. In L'viv, the artist will present the Hasidic Jewish music in modern adaptation.
"Varnitshkes" (Ukraine)
In Lviv, which is the heart of Western Ukraine, in 2007 the ensemble "Varnitshkes" was born. It perform the mixture of Klezmer and pop, folk and rock with spicy pinch of jazz!
"Varnitshkes" has been taking part in the International Festival "LvivKlezFest" for eight years. Besides that, they had the honor to represent Ukraine at the European Festival of Jewish Choirs in Vienna (2013), Rome (2014), London (2015) and many others international cultural forums.
In their repertoire, you can find old and modern Yiddish songs full of world-famous melodies and rare niguns.

"Gefilte Drive" (Israel)
"Gefilte Drive" is a modern klezmer band full of Western and Eastern music, kosher rock-n-roll, Odessa's frenzy and lyric. Most of their tracks are the crazy musical mixes. Each composition proves the band's name. We can call them "mini-Israel", because they unite musicians from almost all countries of Exodus.
The members of the band took part at the American Festival "JetLаg", represented Israel at various music festivals, such as "Golden road", "Days of Israel in Belarus", "Narva Bike", "Yahad 2014" in Estonia, the Festival of Jewish Music in Kazan and many other music events.

"Klezmafour" (Poland)
"Klezmafour" was founded in Lublin. Members of the band belong to Lublin, Białostok and Warsaw. The young people play Klezmer and Balkan music and have already received two awards at the International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam. These awards allow them to make a tour in the United States and Canada.
This band participate in all music festivals in Poland and energizes the audience in Germany, UK, Turkey, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Spain and the Czech Republic.

"SHO?! - Klezmer band Odessa (Ukraine)
The idea to create a "Jewish folk-project" appeared in Odessa. The musicians were among the first who started playing klezmer music in Ukraine.
The band changed the format and name many times, but now fix in your memory the name - "Odessa's Klezmer Band". Beside that the musicians recently added to their repertoire Balkan and Gypsy songs and melodies, which they play under the name "SHO?!".
Despite 23 years of folk music playing, musicians managed to save passion for Klezmer music. The music, which comes directly from heart and is full of sea and sun, hot aroma of Bessarabian steppes Southern wine. It will make you laugh and cry, drink wine and dance and think about life.
